Eging (squid)
36 rod series from 4 Japanese makers, 1.651 m (5'5") to 2.83 m (9'3").
Casting an "egi" — a shrimp-shaped squid jig — from the shore. The style started in Japan and is now fished worldwide. Egi are sized in "go" (号), not grams; 3.0 is the common all-round size.
The makers file these under Shore eging (squid)(ショアエギング)、Eging (squid)(エギング)、Tip-run eging (squid)、Bigfin reef squid (aori-ika)(アオリイカ)、Bigfin reef squid (eging)(アオリイカ・イカ). We only group the makers’ own categories together — we do not decide what a rod is for.
How to choose
Rods are chosen by the squid-jig size you cast (2.5–4.0 go) and by length: around 8–8.6 ft (2.4–2.6 m) is the usual shore length, shorter for boats. Look for the lightest rod your budget allows, because you work the jig all day. A 2500-size spinning reel with PE 0.6–0.8 is the common set-up.
