How to choose

Length is the first choice: shorter rods (around 8–9 ft, 2.4–2.7 m) for rivers and harbours, longer surf rods for open beaches where casting distance matters. Match the lure-weight rating to your usual lures, then pick a reel by size number: 2500–3000 for rivers and harbours, 3000–4000 for the surf.
