JDM Tackle Guide

TENRYU model codes explained

TENRYU does not publish a table of what its model codes mean — we checked the official site and found none. So we did not guess. Instead we took the obvious readings of the numbers in each code and tested them against the length TENRYU itself publishes for every size we list. What survived that check is below.

Rod codes — read against TENRYU’s own length figures

We compared every rod code we list with the length TENRYU publishes for it. 348 of 394 sizes (88%) are explained by the readings below, to within 3 cm. The rest do not follow either pattern, and we leave them alone rather than invent a meaning.

The letter at the end

TENRYU does not publish what L, ML, M, MH or H stand for. What it does publish is the rating for each rod, so here is the range those letters actually carry across TENRYU’s own spec tables.

M 41 sizes
lure rating seen: 0.8–7 g (0.03–0.25 oz) · max 200 g (7.1 oz) · High100-180 / Slow150-350
PE line seen: MAX1.2 · MAX2.5 · MAX 2.0
ML 35 sizes
lure rating seen: max 120 g (4.2 oz) · 3–18 g (0.11–0.63 oz) · 5–28 g (0.18–0.99 oz)
PE line seen: MAX2 · 0.6-1.2 · MAX 1.5
L 33 sizes
lure rating seen: max 100 g (3.5 oz) · max 8 g (0.28 oz) · max 80 g (2.8 oz)
PE line seen: MAX 0.6 · 0.3-1.0 · MAX2
MH 25 sizes
lure rating seen: max 100 g (3.5 oz) · MAX80 (Best Plug 50 , JIG 60) · High120-200 / Slow180-400
PE line seen: MAX 3 · MAX5 · MAX3
H 20 sizes
lure rating seen: max 150 g (5.3 oz) · Best80 / Max100 · High150-250 / Slow200-450
PE line seen: MAX3 · 0.8-2.5 · 10

These are the ratings most often seen against each letter in this site’s data, not an official TENRYU definition. The same letter means something different on a trout rod and on a jigging rod, so always check the rating printed on the model page.
