YAMAGA Blanks model codes explained

YAMAGA Blanks does not publish a table of what its model codes mean — we checked the official site and found none. So we did not guess. Instead we took the obvious readings of the numbers in each code and tested them against the length YAMAGA Blanks itself publishes for every size we list. What survived that check is below.

Rod codes — read against YAMAGA Blanks’s own length figures

We compared every rod code we list with the length YAMAGA Blanks publishes for it. 244 of 273 sizes (89%) are explained by the readings below, to within 3 cm. The rest do not follow either pattern, and we leave them alone rather than invent a meaning.

The letter at the end

YAMAGA Blanks does not publish what L, ML, M, MH or H stand for. What it does publish is the rating for each rod, so here is the range those letters actually carry across YAMAGA Blanks’s own spec tables.

M 16 sizes
lure rating seen: 2.5–4 go · 6–32 g · Jig up to 80 g / Plug up to 50 g
PE line seen: PE 0.6–1 · MAX PE 3 · Pe 1–2.5
ML 14 sizes
lure rating seen: 7–28 g · Jig up to 60 g / Plug up to 40 g · 2.5–3.5 go (up to 24 g)
PE line seen: Pe 0.8–1.5 · PE 0.5–0.8 · PE 0.6–1.5
L 10 sizes
lure rating seen: Jig 15–60 g / Plug Max 42 g · 5–21 g · 1.8–3.5 go (up to 21 g)
PE line seen: PE 0.4–0.8 · up to PE 1 · MAX PE 2

These are the ratings most often seen against each letter in this site’s data, not an official YAMAGA Blanks definition. The same letter means something different on a trout rod and on a jigging rod, so always check the rating printed on the model page.
